COVID-19 and climate change: the interconnectedness between the global health and environmental crises

As a means to celebrate the WorldHealthDay and its mission of reminding world leaders to keep the world healthy, it is timely to bring attention to two major challenges we face nowadays: covid19 and climatechange .

Experts point out that increased environmental degradation helps the spread of diseases – in other words the interconnectedness between health and environment: https://lnkd.in/g3j2ZPm .

On the other hand, the response to the pandemic might have (at least a short term) positive effect, due to the slow down of global activity and related reduction of GHG emissions – both in terms of personal behaviour, as we stay more at home and consume less, as well as macro economic activity. At the same time, the retake of business as usual once the crisis is over might undo the initial good, and points out to the need for overall societal change.

As another commentator rightly puts it, “(p)erhaps the real question is whether we can create a functioning economy that supports people without threatening life on Earth, including our own.”
